Comment les ordres mendiants ont-ils réussi à s’épanouir du XIIIe au milieu du XVIe siècle dans l’environnement socio-économique de l’Europe centrale, à dominante rurale, donc peu compatible à première vue avec un mode de vie caractérisé par la dépendance à l’égard des donateurs ? N’ont-ils pas été contraints de fonder d’emblée leur subsistance sur des biens et revenus fonciers, au risque de perdre leur « identité » mendiante ? Tel est le point de départ de l’enquête collective dont ce volume rassemble les premiers résultats.
How did the Mendicant orders manage to flourish from the thirteenth to the middle of the sixteenth century in the social and economic environment of Central Europe, characterized as it was by rurality, and so hardly compatible with a way of life that relied on donations ? Were the orders forced to base their living on real property and income, at the risk of losing their “mendicant identity ?” This is the starting point of a collective inquiry that includes contributions by historians, art historians, and archeologists from ten different countries, the results of which are published in this volume. Not only are the history of the Mendicant orders and the economics of donations explored, but the implementation of Christian soteriology at the edges of the Western world.
